‘Capitalizing Opportunities for Growth and Security’
New Delhi. To further strengthen the relationship between the Indian and Swedish defence industry and identify potential opportunities, Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Swedish Security & Defence Industry Association (SOFF) is organising a ‘Webinar on India-Sweden Defence Industry Cooperation’ on June 8.
The time of the webinar, which will be on virtual mode, is from 1315-1730 hours IST.
India and Sweden have a long-standing diplomatic relationship, which has been marked by regular high-level interactions at various international fora. During these interactions, the defence sector has been recognised as a key area of cooperation with immense scope for the Industries from both sides to collaborate.
It is pertinent to note here that the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of defence in 2009 and more recently this momentum was further enhanced during the ‘India-Sweden Virtual Summit’, in March 2021, where leaders of both countries Prime Minister Narendra Modi and and his Swedish counterpart Löfven converged on strategic issues related to, inter alia, defence, counterterrorism, peace and security.
Moreover, Prime Minister has also extended an invitation to the Swedish firms to participate in the ‘Make in India’ programme and set up manufacturing units in India.
SIDM has been working closely with the Swedish government to foster a close working relationship between the Indian and Swedish defence industry. In 2017, SIDM in partnership with CII and SOFF conducted the first ‘India-Sweden Defence Industry Day’ in New Delhi. Two years after in 2019, SIDM mounted a strong 20+ member delegation to Stockholm, where the Indian industry interacted with senior government officials from Sweden and discussed opportunities for mutual cooperation.
The Webinar will bring together senior officials from both governments and industry and would involve discussions on enhancing India-Sweden Defence Cooperation.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Swedish counterpart Peter Hultqvisthave consented to address the Inaugural Session of the Webinar.
